Tajna Tanović is a performing artist, actress and singer-songwriter with 23 years of experience in the performing arts worldwide.
Her education includes the acting school for children, Koliba (Sarajevo), the Celan Theater School at Burgau Castle (Germany), as well as The Lee Strasberg Theater and Film Institute (New York).
Tanovic was the leading actress of the TAS Theater in Germany from 1993 to 2004. The TAS production “Project 3” toured Germany in 1993/1994 and was featured in over ten major theaters (Munich’s Kammerspiele, Hamburg’s Thalia Theater as well as Slovenia’s cultural center in Ljubljana, Cankarjev Dom) with reviews published in papers such as the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung and the Süddeutsche Zeitung. Tanovic’s roles at Theater TAS have included: the Girl in “Project 3”, May in Beckett’s “Footfalls”, Antigone in Sophocles’ “Antigone”, Ophelia in “Roses are Immortal”, Daisy in “Cabaret International”, Galathea in “Wedekind’s Cabaret” and Ulrike-Marlene in “The Struwwelpit & Co.”
In 1993 she performed at the “UNESCO Charity Gala for Children in Need” in Düsseldorf with the poem “This is Sarajevo speaking, I am an island in the heart of the world.”
As a musician shows have included two concerts at Nobel Prize winner Heinrich Böll’s summer festival in Germany (2001 and 2003). She was the lead singer of the band “Love in Shakespeare” performing Shakespeare’s sonnets. Her voice could also be heard on the radio broadcaster Deutsche Welle, for which she wrote and hosted a music chart show. With her voice she contributed to PUMA’s widely published “Soundtrip for FIFA World Cup 2006 in Germany”.
In 2003 Tanovic was given the Apollinaire Award, for outstanding achievements in the French language for her work on French playwright and actress Yasmina Reza’s play “Life x 3.”
Recent New York projects have included “Canal Street Station”, a radio theater piece by 31Down, the experimental dance film “Waterfront Access” by award-winning director Floanne Ankah, “Yard Sale: New Footfalls...” by Theater TAS, presented by the arts organization chashama and several projects with Dalzell Productions. She has performed in the “60x60 Dance” event on April 7, 2009 at the Galapagos art space in DUMBO.
Tanovic has written, co-directed and stars in the short film “Dolly Belle” (2009). It is currently being submitted to various international film festivals.
She is collaborating with Theater TAS in New York with multiple projects in pre-production: “Bookshelf Poetry Project”, “The Blonde Jewish Girl” by Isak Samokovlija, “Macbeth” by William Shakespeare and “Wedekind’s Awakening Cabaret”, music and text by Frank Wedekind, among others.
Tanovic is currently developing her first solo album.
She has worked on the English translation of the plays “The Last Story” and “New Footfalls“ both by Kaca Celan (from German) and “The Blonde Jewish Girl” by Isak Samokovlija (from Bosnian). |
